Art

at West Didsbury CE Primary School

We believe that art stimulates creativity, imagination and inventiveness. Our progressive art and design curriculum equips our pupils with the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express themselves. We encourage every child to experiment, create, make mistakes and succeed; our lessons aim to remove the inhibitions and fear that builds up as children grow and keep them in tune with the creativity they are born with.

How Do We Teach Art?

We follow a bespoke art curriculum based heavily on the AccessArt Primary Art Curriculum. This scheme is designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills. Our holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure your pupils learn through art, as well as about art. It’s our aim that by the time every child leaves Year 6 they can feel as if they have found an area of the visual arts that is relevant and engaging to them – that might be through drawing, or making, or designing, or talking about art.

Art is taught every other half term in 2-hour sessions each week. Each year, children will complete ‘pathways’ learning about key artists and techniques through a range of drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking and collage.
