Our Rights, Our School: Understanding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
At West Didsbury, we believe in creating a learning environment where every child feels safe, respected, and empowered. That's why we are proud to be a Rights Respecting School at the Bronze level, and we are excitedly working towards achieving our Silver accreditation!
But what does it mean to be a Rights Respecting School? It all starts with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
What is the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child?
The UNCRC is a list of promises made by almost every country to protect the rights of all children under 18– 54 articles that outline the fundamental human rights of every child. These rights ensure children have the chance to survive and grow, be protected, develop their full potential, and participate in decisions that affect them. It’s about making sure children are treated with respect and have the opportunities they need.
Why are the Rights of the Child Important?
These rights are important because they help to create a fairer and safer world for children. They ensure that children are treated with dignity and respect, and that they have the opportunities they need to thrive. By understanding and upholding these rights, we can: Protect children from harm, give children a voice, help children learn and grow and create a sense of belonging:
West Didsbury: A Rights Respecting Bronze School, Journeying to Silver!
As a Bronze Rights Respecting School, we have already learned about the UNCRC and started to think about how these rights matter in our school. We are now working towards Silver accreditation. This means we are showing that the UNCRC is a key part of our school's everyday life and makes a real difference to our pupils. We are focusing on:
Embedding rights in our curriculum: Making sure children learn about their rights in different subjects.
Empowering pupils: Giving children more opportunities to have their voices heard and to participate in decision-making.
Making a difference: Taking action to support the rights of children locally and globally.
We are excited about this journey and believe that understanding and respecting the rights of the child is essential for creating a positive and successful learning environment for everyone at West Didsbury. Keep an eye out for updates on our progress towards Silver!
